The Vegetable Garden in October

Overview:

Generally this month is about harvesting as necessary, and tidying up before winter sets in.

 

At any time this month:.

Cut down Potato haulms and continue harvesting the tubers.

Commence Preparing beds for the following years crops.

Remove Runner bean and Pea support after the harvest is complete.

Remove Globe Artichoke suckers.

 

Week 40 - 30t Sept. to 5th Oct.

Plant out Garlic and Japanese Onions.

To speed up the ripening process of outdoor Tomatoes remove the leaves.

Protect French beans from early frosts.

Collect a few French beans to save as seed for the following season.

Harvest Beetroot if not done previously.

Pot up Mint for winter use.

 

Week 41 - 6th Act. to 12th Oct

Continue with Winter digging and clearing up.

 

Week 42 - 13th Oct. to 19th Oct.

Force Asparagus crowns if required.

Blanch Endive.

Plant out Garlic if not done previously.

Continue with Winter digging and clearing up.

 

Week 43 - 20th Oct. to 26th Oct.

Thin out Japanese Onions sown insitu.

If your ground is heavy or liable to deep frost penetration in winter, lift and store Turnips sown before July.

Lift and store Beetroot and Carrots if not done previously.

 

Week 44 - 27th Oct. to 2nd Nov.

Mulch Fennel bulbs.

Harvest early varieties of Brussels sprouts if ready.

Cut the stems down of one and two year old Globe Artichoke plants and mulch plants.

Continue with Winter digging and clearing up.
