The Vegetable Garden in October

 

Overview ;

Generally this month is about harvesting as necessary, and tidying up before winter sets in.

 

 
 
 

At any time this month;

  • Cut down potato haulms and continue harvesting the tubers.

 

 

 

 

 

 
 
 

Week No. 40 - 30th Sept to 5th Oct

 

 

  • To speed up the ripening process of outdoor tomatoes remove the leaves.

 

 

  • Collect a few French beans to save as seed for the following season.

 

 

  • Pot up Mint for winter use.

 

 
 
 

Week No. 41 - 6th to 12th

 

 

 
 
 

Week No. 42 - 13th to 19th

 

 

 

  • Plant out Garlic if not done previously.

 

 

 
 
 

Week No. 43 - 20th to 26th

 

 

  • If your ground is heavy or liable to deep frost penetration in winter, lift and store turnips sown before July.

 

 

 
 
 

Week No. 44 - 27th to 2nd Nov

 

 

 

  • Cut the stems down of one and two year old Globe Artichoke plants, and mulch plants.
