The Vegetable Garden in March

Overview:

The soil should be beginning to warm up, a sure sign of this is the emergence of annual and perennial weeds.

Do not be tempted to sow / plant out too early.

Plants sown / planted later have a way of catching up with those that were sown / planted earlier, this can be generally put down to soil temperatures, rather than ambient temperatures!

Plants sown / planted in cold soils are generally held in check (stop growing) assuming the don't die off first!

Week 9 - 26th Feb. to 4th Mar.

Set up cloches to warm the soil for early sowings.

Check over previously dug beds and remove any emerging weeds that were missed at the digging stage.

Week 10 - 5th Mar. to 11th AMar

Make a sowing of Radishes under a cloche in a coldframe.

Week 11 - 12th Mar. to 18th Mar.

Thin out Fennel to leave strongest seedling.

Week 12 - 19th Mar. to 25th Mar.
