The Vegetable Garden in August

 

Overview ;

Like last month; keep on the top of the weeds with regular hoeing.

 

Water and top dress the vegetable beds with a general fertiliser as necessary.

 

Consider sowing 'Green manure' crops in areas where previous crops have been harvested.

 

 
 
 

Week No. 31 - 29th Jul to 4th Aug

 

 

 

 

 

  • If not done previously; sow a few Parsley seeds in pots to be grown for use in the kitchen during the winter.

 

  • Prepare beds after harvesting a previous crop and sow some quick growing salad crops.

 

 
 
 

Week No. 32 - 5th to 11th

 

 

 

 

  • Consider planting some potatoes for harvesting around Christmas.

 

 
 
 

Week No. 33 - 12th to 18th

 

 

  • Check Sweet Corn plants regularly and harvest the cobs as they ripen.

 

 

 
 
 

Week No. 34 - 19th to 25th

 

  • Sow some hardy Corn salad (Lamb's lettuce), and Cress if required.

 

  • Feed autumn cropping brassicas.

 

 
 
 

Week No. 35 - 26th to 1st Sept

 

  • Make a late sowing of hardy maincrop turnip.

 

 

 

  • Continue cutting heads of Calabrese to encourage secondary heads (spears)
