The Vegetable garden in October

Generally this month is about tidying up and preparing for the next year before winter sets in; e.g.

Cut down haulms and continue harvesting maincrop Potatoes.

Prepare new Asparagus, Carrot, Celery, Onion, Pea and Turnip beds.

Remove runner bean frame if harvesting is complete.

Remove Globe Artichoke suckers.

 
 

Week 40 - 30th to 5th

Plant out Garlic & Japanese Onions.

Assist outdoor tomatoes to ripen.

Pot up a few pieces of Mint for winter use.   

Protect late crop of French beans.

 
 

Week 41 - 6th to 12th

Continue preparing new beds as listed above.

 
 

Week 42 - 13th to 19th

Force Asparagus crowns.

Blanch both curled and broad-leaved Endive.

Plant out Garlic if not done previously.

Continue preparing beds for next year.

 
 

Week 43 - 20th to 26th

Lift & store Beetroot Carrots and Turnip.

Thin out seed sown Japanese onions.

 
 

Week 44 - 27th to 2nd

Continue to cut/pick cabbages, cauliflowers, and early Brussels sprouts.

Cut down globe artichokes.

Continue preparing beds for next year.
