The Ornamental Garden in January

Overview ;

Happy New Year

Normally there is not a lot to be done in the Ornamental garden at this time of the year other than to keep it free from wind blown detritus.

Week No. 1 - 1st to 7th

  • Cover tender plants that can not be moved with a few layers of agricultural fleece to protect them from frosts.

  • Loosely tie Cortaderia leaves together and spread bracken / straw around the base of the plant/s

Week No. 2 - 8th to 14th

  • Clear away old fronds from the crowns of hardy ferns.

  • Check recently planted ferns to ensure that they have not been dislodged by rain / frost, and 'firm in' if necessary.

  • Lift any self-seeded perennials and re-plant in a preferred location.
