Ornamental garden in March

At any time this month;

If not already done, remove the remains last year's perennials and tidy the beds / borders, and dig out any emerging perennial weeds.

Ground cover plants can be cut back to expose the new growth.

Note;Be careful not to damage any emerging spring bulbs.

Feed spring bulbs & perennials.

Note; Powdered and granular feeds require the right weather to dissolve, so a liquid feed is often the better option.

On completion mulch the beds to deter weeds and retain moisture.

Finish pruning roses and other shrubs and tie in where necessary.

Divide established clumps of perennials.

 
 

Week 9 - 26th to 4th

Carry out tasks shown above;

 
 

Week 10 - 5th to 11th

Carry out tasks shown above;

Prune Buddleia, Celastrus, Cotoneaster & Wisteria.

Plant out Camellia & Cornus if weather conditions allow.

Thin out Actinidia if required.

Collect Cistus seed if required.

Mulch Althaea.

Feed Snowdrops.

 
 

Week 11 - 12th to 18th

Carry out tasks shown above;

Plant out,( if weather conditions allow) climbing shrubs such as Honeysuckle and Clematis if this was not done last autumn.

 
 

Week 12 - 19th to 25th

Carry out tasks shown above;

Plant out Alyssum saxatile cuttings taken last autumn if weather conditions allow.

Divide and replant Snowdrops if necessary.

Prune Ivy & Passiflora.

 
 

Week 13 - 26th to 1st

Carry out tasks shown above;

Roses; hard prune newly planted or old neglected plants.

Feed climbers.

Plant out new Oxalis, or divide established plants if weather conditions allow.

Plant out Pieris if not done the previous October.

Divide and replant Hellebores and border Pinks if weather conditions allow.

Thin out Colutea & Phlox.

Tidy up Cordalyne plants and heather beds.

Prune; Abies, Buddleia & Hamamelis.

Feed Camellia, Iris & Rhodohypoxis.

Mulch Lychnis, Potentilla & Rhodohypoxis.

Protect new growth on Althaea from slug damage.

Prune Group 2 & 3 Clematis as necessary and check group 1 varieties for winter damage and trim.

Layer Clematis and sever previous years layers.
