Ornamental garden in July

At any time this month;

Collect; Allium, Aquilegia, Delphinium, Digitalis, Mimulus, Pacific coast Iris, & Silene seeds.

Pick Helychrysum & Physalis flowers for drying.

Tidy up Digitalis, Lamium & Phlox after flowering.

Deadhead flowering shrubs.

Clip and shape bay trees if deemed necessary and use the clippings for cuttings if required.

Check Geraniums for disease and treat as necessary.

Feed and deadhead Delphinium, roses and bedding plants.

Spray roses to control blackspot.

Cut away suckers, long unwanted runners and any unecessary growth around trees and shrubs.

Note; Prior to cutting these off; consider if you would like to generate some new stock from these plants.

Shrubs such as Hedera, Jasmine, Lonicera, Virginia Creeper & Wisteria can be quite easily layered to give new plants.

Support taller plants as necessary and tie back climbers to their supports.

 
 

Week 27 - 1st to 7th

Boost Sweet Peas with a liquid feed.

Disbud Calistephus (Aster)

Divide; Bluebells (Endymion)

Layer Carnations.

 
 

Week 28 - 8th to 14th

Plant out Eucalyptus.

Ensure Gladioli are well watered.

Cut back established Wisteria and tie in as necessary.

Prepare beds and divide & replant congested clumps of Bearded Iris.

 
 

Week 29 - 15th to 21st

Continue feeding disbud Chrysanthemums.

 
 

Week 30 - 22nd to 28th

Support Gladioli and check for pests.

Thin out branches and buds then give Dahlia plants a high potash feed.

Trim/prune Deutzia, Philadelphus after flowering.
