Ornamental Garden in August

Week 31 - 29th to 4th

Clear away the withered remains of Colchicum (autumn crocus)

Collect Cyclamen & Meconopsis seed when ripe, and sow immediately.

Protect herbaceous plants from powdery mildew disease by applying a suitable systemic fungicide.

Spray plants that are infected with downy mildew with a suitable fungicide.

Deadhead all types of roses, unless you want them to produce autumn hips, pick off diseased leaves.

If not done previously; trim/prune Philadelphus after flowering.

 
 

Week 32 - 5th to 11th

Plant out bearded iris.

Dry Lavender for pot pourri,and tidy up plants with shears.

Pick Limonium & Papaver/Poppy for drying.

Deadhead Dianthus to encourage second flush of flowers.

Collect Sweet William seed.  

Layer Lonicera.

 
 

Week 33 - 12th to 18th

Prepare Auricula bed.

Layer Rhododendrons.

Plant out Crepis.

 
 

Week 34 - 19th to 25th

Remove spent heads from Dahlias, water them in in dry periods,check for pests and treat accordingly.

Check stakes and ties on tall plants and re-tie as necessary.

Apply a surface mulch of straw or garden compost to reduce moisture loss in the soil.

Cut Alchemilla down to ground level if it has finished flowering.

Collect Anacyclus Dictamnus Eremurus seed.

Trim Buxus (Box) and take cuttings if required.

 
 

Week 35 - 26th to 1st

Cover Dahlia beds if required.

Cut back Aconitum & Eremurus if it has finished flowering.

Collect Crocosmia seed if ripe.

Prepare Rose beds for new stock.

Layer Jasmine nudiflorum.

Divide Iris & Paeonia.

Plant out; Abelia, Althaea, Aquilegia, Berberis, Camellia, Campanula, Ceanothus,

Convallaria, Cornus, Crocus, Delphinium, Desfontainea, Endymion, Geranium, Geum,

Hostas, Houttuynia, Iris, Kniphofia, Lavender, Lonicera, Lunaria, Meconopsis, Paeonia,

Phlox, Pulsatilla, Rhodohypoxis, Snowdrops & Verbascum.
