Miscellaneous tasks in May

At any time this month;

Cut lawn if conditions allow, and remove dandelions, daisies and other weeds.

Weed garden / allotment before young weed seedlings become established.

As the soil temperatures warm up keep an eye open for slugs & snails.

Similarly keep an eye open for aphids.

Take precautions to prevent plant diseases such as mildew,blackspot or rust taking hold.

Stock pond with fish, if you were unable to restock last month.

Install a submersible pump to help to keep ponds aerated during spells of warm weather

Elodea canadensis (Canadian Pondweed) is a good oxygenator.

Children may be drawn to a garden pond,so erect a sturdy barrier to prevent them falling in.

Rejuvenate your timber decking by blasting away the accumulated algae and grime with a pressure washer.

Once dry, sand down any rough edges and surfaces, then apply decking stain to both preserve the timber.

 
 

Week 18 - 30th to 5th

Tie climbers to their supports.

Place Basil, Brachycome, Godetia seedlings and Dahlia cuttings in coldframe.

Plant out Berberis Virginia Creeper cuttings into nursery bed.

 
 

Week 19 - 6th to 12th

Place Cabbage &  Gaillardia in coldframe to harden off.

 
 

Week 20 - 13th to 19th

Now is a good time to clear up in the rockery.

Mulch around alpines,fruit trees and shrubs.

Sprinkle fertiliser around the base of hedges and shrubs.

Spring bulbs that have died back can be cut back.

To get summer bulbs, corms and tubers off to a good start plant them up in pots for planting out later.

New and old growth on spreading plants can be tidied up.

Treat moss in lawn.

 
 

Week 21 - 20th to 26th

Place Azalea seedlings in cold frame.

Place collars of card or old carpet underlay tightly around the stems of cabbage,broccoli and other brassicas to deter root fly.

 
 

Week 22 - 27th to 2nd

Place Leeks in coldframe.

Pot up a few spare bedding plants to fill those gaps that invariably occur during the summer months.

Keep them in a greenhouse or cold frame until required, and remember to water and feed them regularly.
