Erect windbreaks
To prevent rain leaching out plant nutrients from prepared beds, cover the soil with polythene
Pot up well rooted Christmas tree
Keep an open breathing space for fish in frozen ponds
Root prune flower shy fruit trees.
Keep sheds, greenhouses and frames clear of leaves and other rubbish that will make warm
winter quarters for mice and similar rodents, and set traps.
Continue clearing ground of spent crops and rough dig as weather and soil conditions
allow.
Apply a proprietary winter wash to dormant deciduous shrubs and trees
Check over empty containers and give the sound ones a thorough clean.
Clean & overhaul lawnmowers
Check all exposed water pipes
Continue removing leaves from lawns if necessary
Protect young fruit trees from hungry rodents and deer
Take the opportunity to make any late additions to your seed and plant orders
Make a note to keep a garden diary during the following year, for this will help plan for replacements in future
years.
