Make a note to keep a garden diary during the following year, for this will help plan for replacements in future years.

Keep an open breathing space for fish in frozen ponds.
Check over empty containers and give the sound ones a thorough clean.
Stand pots on bricks to improve drainage.
Pot up rooted Christmas tree.
Get petrol mowers serviced in readiness for next year.
Remove leaves from lawns if necessary.
Avoid walking on waterlogged / frosted lawns.
Erect windbreaks.
Root prune flower shy fruit trees.
Check that tree ties and supports are secure.
Apply a proprietary winter wash to dormant deciduous shrubs and trees.
Protect young fruit trees from hungry rodents and deer.
Keep sheds, greenhouses and frames clear of leaves and other rubbish that will make warm winter quarters for mice and similar rodents, and set traps especially where crops are being stored.
Continue clearing ground of spent crops and rough dig as weather and soil conditions allow.
To prevent rain leaching out plant nutrients from prepared beds, cover the soil with polythene. |
