Growing Indoors or under glass in July

Overview:

Vigilance is a pre-requisite this month to ensure that plants do not suffer from over heating, drying out or attack from pests.

As ambient temperature can be quite high at this time of year, ensure that the greenhouse is well ventilated.

Similarly shade tender plants from direct sunlight, and ensure they do not want for water.

 

Week 27 - 1st Jul. to 7th Jul..

Open roof vents and doors fully every morning and fit shade netting if necessary.

Regulary tie in Tomatoes and Cucumbers.

Regularly remove side shoots from Tomato cordons.

Keep an eye open for Tomato and Cucumber diseases developing, plus pests such as Aphids, Red Spider mite, and Whitefly.

Manually pollinate Melons if necessary.

Commence feeding Sweet Peppers.

Check over stored Tulips.

 

Week 28 - 8th Jul. to 14th Jul.

Water container grown Begonias and House plants, and feed weekly to maintain strong growth.

Thin out excessive growth on greenhouse climbers before they obscure light from adjacent plants.

Ensure that Bougainvillea is regularly watered.

Feed potted Chrysanthemums.

Secure bud on potted Chrysanthemums.

Pick Cucumbers as they become ready.

 

Week 29 - 15th Jul. to 21st Jul.

Ensure that Tomatoes are regularly watered and fed and the fruit is picked when ripened.

 

Week 30 - 22nd Jul. to 28th Jul.

When Melons are about the size of a tennis ball, commence weekly feeding with a High Potash Liquid feed.

Pinch out Gardenia cuttings.
