Fruit Garden in December

Week 49   1st-7th

Check that fruit cage netting is in good order, and repair as necessary.

n.b. Small-mesh netting can easily become snow laden, change to a larger mesh, such as 19mm (3/4”) or check daily and push off snow with a broom.

Individual fruit trees can be protected, by draping netting over the branches, or by driving a strong stake into the ground next to the plant, and placing the netting over that.

Place a plant pot or similar on top of the stake to protect the netting.

Week 50   8th-14th

Apply a suitable winter wash to Grape vines

Week 51   15th-21st

Complete pruning of Blackberries, Loganberries and similar cane fruits as soon as possible, but avoid days when shoots are frosted.

Week 52   22nd-31st

Merry Christmas
