Bougainvillea

  Q

I have a Bougainvillea that is about 1 metre (39") tall which is kept in a frost free greenhouse.

Can you advise me on winter care and how to propagate it?

  A

As the weather becomes colder, reduce watering, then keep the plant almost dry during January and February.

In February prune the plant by cutting back all last year's side shoots to within 25mm (1”) of its base, maintaining a framework of old branches as you go.

Water the plant freely in spring and summer, and give liquid feeds frequently.

In late spring take softwood cuttings from new growth.
