I want to make a box edging can I raise my own from cuttings?

Box cuttings can be taken in early spring, or autumn by means of heel, softwood or semi hardwood cuttings.

Select young shoots about 100mm (4”) long, with a heel of older wood still attached.  

Remove the lower leaves and insert the cutting/s around the edge of a pot filled with a suitable cutting compost, then place the pots in a cold frame or cool greenhouse to root.

Once roots have formed, pot the young plants on individually into 70mm (3”) pots of potting compost.

Grow on until the following autumn and, when they can be planted out in their permanent positions.
