Viola odorata (sweet violet) grows to around 150mm tall with a spread of around 300mm (12"), and is a useful plant for shady areas.
It forms tufts of thick rhizomes and spreads by means of runners.
It is also a prolific self seeder.
It flowers from February to April, and sometimes in the autumn.

Cultivation;
Week 37; Sow seeds from now until late autumn in trays of seed compost placed in a cold frame.
The germination may be slow and erratic, but some young plants should be ready for setting out in spring.
Established plants of sweet violet can be lifted and divided now.
Replant the divisions into rich compost under frames for early flowering next year.
Or pot up one or two divisions for early display in the house.
