| Potato blackleg |
Blackleg infection starts as a black lesion at the base of the stem, which leads to foliage collapse.
It then spreads to the tubers which rot if badly affected.
Black leg is caused by a bacterium which spreads from contaminated seed potatoes and infects the young stems.
Black leg is controlled by buying disease free seed potatoes and practising crop rotation.
