Potato blackleg

Blackleg infection starts as a black lesion at the base of the stem, which leads to foliage collapse.

It then spreads to the tubers which rot if badly affected.

Black leg is caused by a bacterium which spreads from contaminated seed potatoes and infects the young stems.

Black leg is controlled by buying disease free seed potatoes and practising crop rotation.
