Euonymus fortunei can be grown in ordinary garden soil, in full sun, partial shade or total shade.
The evergreen species can tolerate a considerable amount of shade, but require a sheltered position.
Variegated forms are usually less hardy and are best grown against walls or with the overhead protection of trees.

The insignificant, small, green-white flowers are borne in May and June.
Left to their own resources they can reach a height of 2 metres (7ft) with a similar spread.
They make reasonable topiary subjects.
Trim plants in April / May to keep them at a manageable size.
Note; Cut out stems of Variegated varieties that have 'reverted' to plain green leaves.
Cultivation;
Week 26-28; Take 75mm (3") long cuttings of lateral shoots with a heel.
Insert into pots containing equal parts (by volume) peat and sand and place in a cold frame to root.
When rooted the following spring( Week 18)plant out in a nursery bed and grow on for a couple of years, before placing them in their final quarters.
Week 35; Sow seeds when ripe in pots or pans of seed compost and place in a coldframe to germinate.
The seeds can take up to 18 months to germinate.
When large enough to handle, prick the seedlings off into 75mm (3") pots, then grow on as for cuttings.
Week 36; Plant from now until the end of October.
Cut back growth by one-third in the first spring after planting to encourage a bushy habit.
