Banksias originate from Australia and were named after Sir Joseph Banks who, in 1770, was the first European to collect specimens of these plants.

Plant types range from low-growing shrubs to trees up to 25 m (80 ft) tall.

Some species, for example Banksia ericifolia and Banksia menziesii , are known for their spectacular flower heads.

Banksias grow best in well drained soils in a sunny position.

Week 10; Sow seeds in very free draining seed compost, this should never be allowed to dry out.

Germinate at a temperature of 21°-26°C (70°-80°F).

Germination should take about 3-4 weeks.

Week 16; Prick out seedlings as the first true leaves appear into 70mm (3”) pots of potting compost.

Planting out; In the UK it is better to grow plants / seedlings for the first year in pots, potting on in to larger pots as required.

Plant out the following year (Week 23)in a sunny well drained spot when all fear of frosts have passed to give them a chance to be establish themselves before the following winter.

n.b. Ensure the planting quarters are not in a frost pocket.

Alternatively plant out in large containers to restrict growth.
