Overview
Anacyclus pyrethrum x depressus is a short lived hardy semi-deciduous perennial, with finely cut fern-like leaves that form neat 50-100mm (2"-4") high mats that spread up to 300mm (12”) across.
It is well suited to growing in sunny well drained rockeries.
It is drought tolerant and because of this,it won’t tolerate wet soggy conditions.
In northern or exposed areas plants perform / survive better through winter if offered some overhead cover (cloches)
The 50mm (2”) diameter white-yellow daisy-like flowers appear from June to August.
It is a prolific self seeder.
Cultivation
Week 8:
Sow seeds thinly into trays of gritty seed compost.
Place the trays outdoors for a couple of nights allow them to freeze, then fetch into a temperature of 16-18°C (64-68°F) to germinate.
Week 12:
Pot up autumn sown seedlings individually into 70mm (3”) pots.
Self seeded plants can be carefully lifted and treated like seed sown seedlings.
Be careful not to over water them, but equally, do not allow them to dry out.
Week 14:
Take 75mm (3”) non-flowering side-shoots and insert them into equal parts (by volume) peat and sand, then place in a cold frame to root.
Cuttings can also be taken in Weeks 28-32
When rooted, pot them up into 75mm (3”) of John Innes potting compost No. 1 (or similar).
Week 34:
Remove faded flower stems and collect seed.
Week 35:
Sow freshly collected seed in gritty seed compost in a greenhouse at a temperature of 16-18°C (64-68°F).
Week 36:
Plant out cuttings that were taken in spring, in full sun 250-300mm (10”-12”) apart in free draining soil.
Leave planting out of summer cuttings till the following spring.
